A QUICK GUIDE TO DONATING SPERM
12th April 2018Being a sperm donor is one of the most generous things a guy can do – you’re giving someone the chance to have a baby. Here’s your quick, 6-step guide to the sperm donation process, it’s much simpler than you might think:
1. Apply online
Aged 18-45? You could donate sperm with Semovo. Apply online here, we just need to know a few basics about you to start with, to see if you’re able to proceed.
2. Semen analysis
Now we know you’re suitable, it’s time to see if your sperm is as well. You’ll come to your nearest Semovo sperm bank and give us a sample so we can perform semen analysis. Donor sperm has to be the best quality, so it can withstand the processes of fertility treatment. If your sperm isn’t right for donation, don’t worry – it doesn’t mean you’re infertile.
3. Consultation & counselling
Once we’ve checked your sperm is good for donation, we need to go through your medical history with you and give you implications counselling. This can happen over Skype if you prefer. We’ll also perform screening tests for STIs and genetic conditions, and take you through your consent forms, which give permission for your sperm to be used in fertility treatments.
4. Your first sperm donations
If all your tests are clear, you can now start to donate sperm! We need to build up an initial supply to put into ‘quarantine’ and make sure your sperm is safe to use before we can release it.
5. Personal sperm donor profile
So someone can choose you as their sperm donor, you write an anonymous personal profile. Here’s where you can tell someone all about you and how great you are! You can also include a personal message to any child that’s born.
6. Sperm donor matching
After your sperm has been in quarantine for six months, your first samples can be released for use after you’re rescreened. Your profile will be added to our sperm donor bank database ready for matching. You can now be selected as someone’s sperm donor!
Following up on your donation
If you wish to know, we can tell you if someone’s requested your sperm, and if it’s successfully in treatment at their fertility clinic. We can let you know if a baby has been born, the year of its birth and its gender.
